Whitney Houston and Dana Bash
Whitney Elizabeth Houston was conceived into a musical family, 9 August 1993 in Newark New Jersey. Whitney is the cousin of daughter to singing superstar Dionne. She began singing in the choir at her church The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark when she was a child and at fifteen, she was singing back vocals professionally alongside their mother in Chaka Khan's 1978 smash Im Every Woman. After that, she began to join the backing vocals of Lou Rawls and Jermaine and her mother. The singer began her career as a featured vocalist for the band from New York called Material and it was the quality of her vocal work in the band that caught the attention of several major record labels, including Arista with whom she signed in 1983, and with whom she would remain for the remainder of her career. The year 1985 saw Whitney Houston's first album turned out to be one of the most successful debut albums ever. On the album, she released several hit singles including Saving the Day, All My Love for You How Are You Going to Know If You're Good to Love? and The Greater Love of All. This led to her achieving seven US number one hits in a row. She beat even the Beatles. The album itself sold 3 million copies during its initial year in the US and went on to achieve a worldwide sales of 25 million, earning her the first of her six Grammys. The album that followed it in 1987 Whitney featuring the hit songs What Do Broken Hearts Go and I Wanna Dance With Somebody built upon her successes, but it was 1992's film The Bodyguard (1992) that sealed her place as one of the best-selling artists of all time. The film and her part in it was not well received, but the soundtrack as well as her version to Dolly's I Will Always Love You were charting for months at the top of the charts. In all, she sold nearly 44 million singles and albums worldwide. In the same year she had her daughter Bobbi she married Bobby Brown of the ex-New Edition group. In 1996, her consumption of the drug was well-documented.
